michael moss photography {the blog}

hello and welcome to our brand spankin' new blog.  thanks for stopping by.  we are michael moss photography...and while my name is on the business, I could hardly imagine doing this without the biggest inspiration in my life, my gorgeous wife angelique and my crazy-beautiful, fun-loving daughter, emma joy.

we are based in raleigh, north carolina and although we specialize in weddings, we also enjoy photographing families, high school seniors and any other random, off-the-wall project that may cross our path here or around the country. this blog serves as our own personal journal for all of our professional work, personal imagery, family pictures, travels, and other total randomness.

so grab a coffee, sit back and take some time to look around and get to know us a little better. if you like what you see leave a comment or become a fan on our facebook page.

blessings,

michael

raleigh wedding photographer {kristen + james} engagement

I’m still trying to play catch up from last fall and I hope to have blogged all my sessions before my heavy 2010 kicks into high gear.  I can do it…as Sherman Klump in the Nutty Professor says, “yes…I…can!”

James and Kristin are one of the nicest couples you could ever meet.  One of the reasons we started including engagement sessions in all of our wedding collections (without raising prices) is because it’s a great opportunity for me to get to know my couple’s on a deeper level.  As I tell all of my couples, it usually takes about 20 minutes for them to warm up to me and the camera but by the end of the day I always hear even the most camera shy people say, “That was so much fun!”.  So, without a time limit on any of our sessions, by the end of a shoot after we’ve walked around, laid on the ground, got dirty, got sweaty, stood in the middle of traffic, climbed to the top of a building or braved some crazy weather conditions, we all become best friends real quick!

In my session with James and Kristin, I could sense that Kristin was up for anything, meanwhile James didn’t really trust me…lol.  By the end of the engagement session I was able to convince James he needed to stand in the middle of two-way traffic…at night…in Chapel Hill…with crazy students speeding by.  Anyway, props to both James and Kristin for trusting me and for just having fun.  I can’t wait for their wedding this fall.

Congrats and happy loving!

new york wedding photographer {cassandra + francis}

I’m so ecstatic to finally get to publish Francis and Cassandra’s intimate New York Wedding.  I must admit that when Cassandra first contacted me from Singapore, wanting me to photograph her wedding in New York City, I though it was spam…lol.  I mean, we get inquires from all over, but I must say Singapore is the most distant country yet!

I’m glad I didn’t disregard Cassandra’s email as spam because once I talked to them on the phone (thank God for Skype!) I realized what an awesome, fun-loving couple they were.  I knew right away that we would be a good fit for each other so I was excited to head to New York and brave the chilly temps for their wedding.

Francis and Cassandra lived in New York for a little while and met while they were both journalist for the national broadsheet, The Straits Times.  Francis, a financial journalist and Cassandra, a political journalist are one of the most fun loving, romantic couples I have ever met.  You know how there seems to be some people that kinda sap your energy when you are around them?  Well, Francis and Cassandra were like 6 cans of Red Bull for me…I got excited just being around them!  I mean when I heard that Francis flew from Singapore to Hong Kong to Vancouver to New York to surprise his girlfriend, I thought he was either really lonely, crazy, or just a romantic guy who was in love.  I know for a fact it was the latter.  ;)

When I arrived in Manhattan, it was cold.  Very cold.  It felt like -60 with the wind chill, but you know me, it takes a LOT for me to back down from a shoot.  Rain, sleet, hurricane, earthquake, whatever…it’s just another challenge for me to conquer.  But this day was almost an exception.  It was so cold we could barely stay still in one spot for more than 3 seconds!  But, we were in New York and it WAS sunny at least…so we were going to make the best of it.  Through my chattering teeth and quivering body, I managed to keep my camera still enough to get some awesome shots of this amazing couple.

During the first part of the day we headed out to shoot an engagement session and then we headed back to the gorgeous, Waldorf-Astoria for Francis and Cassandra’s intimate ceremony.  Not only was this couple, fun and romantic, they were hip and stylin’ on the fashion front too.  Francis was rockin’ his James Bond look (or was it Sean Connery?  lol…inside joke) and Cassandra was stunning and dashing in her Kevin Seah Haute Couture dress and Christian Louboutin shoes.

Thank you both so much for being such a blast to work with.  I am blessed to have met you both.  God bless!

ps, don’t forget to fly me over there when you have kids!  ;)

February 26, 2010 - 1:53 pm James Brown - Very lovely work, as always! Well done :)

February 26, 2010 - 2:39 pm Leeann Marie - I like your texturing a lot - it's really appropriate for a "cold" winter shoot. Well done.

February 26, 2010 - 5:05 pm Katy Gray - oooooh, I just adore this whole shoot! The e-session is so sweet and the intimate ceremony is just to die for. I love the purple shutters from the e-session! Beautiful work and your post-processing is wonderful.

February 26, 2010 - 9:33 pm Providence RI Wedding Photographers - Mark Andrew - Great work. I love the one where she has he r head snuggled into his shoulder and I love the last B&W of them in their bedroom

February 27, 2010 - 2:59 am San Jose Photographer - Benipayo - You're one lucky New York photographer to have so many places to take photos of your engagedment. Someday, I will have to visit NY. For now, I have to look at your beautiful photos. Regards, Michael

February 27, 2010 - 11:20 am Francis - Michael, you're a godsent. Thank you for being such a blessing to us, not just for the photos but for just being such a friend. WOOHOO!

March 3, 2010 - 9:34 pm Michael - Mississippi Wedding Photographer - Love the shots up by the piano!

March 3, 2010 - 10:19 pm Kevin Curtis - Love the shot of the shoes with the couple in bed. Nice job!

March 5, 2010 - 4:33 pm Luca Ragogna - Woodbridge Wedding Photographer - Any bride that wears Louboutins has great taste and you can see that in her choice of photographer. Beautiful shots.

March 5, 2010 - 4:42 pm admin - Thank you everyone! That was a sweet comment Luca, thanks. All the props to Cassandra and Francis for being an awesome couple!

March 6, 2010 - 11:51 am Amanda Sutherlin - Lovely, lovely lovely!

emma’s party

In January our daughter Emma turned two and as you will see in this post, there is a certain character that she is particularly fond of.  In an interesting backstory, a few years ago my wife and I went to the state fair in Raleigh, and we were on a mission:  I had never won anything at the fair and my wife and never had something won for her.  Sooo…$800 bucks later, we left the fairgrounds that night with a sense of accomplishment and pride…oh, and a bigger-than-life-sized Curious George.

Flash forward a year later, with the bigger-than-life-sized Curious George stored away in the garage, Emma, for some reason really loves the Curious George cartoon show on TV.  I really think the name “George” was one of her first words…lol.  Of course, she says it like, “Jedge”.  Anyway, we pulled the bigger-than-life-sized Curious George out of hibernation one day and rest, as they say is history.

Because we have family everywhere and Emma’s birthday is close to Christmas, she gets at least two parties every year.  One with the family we are visiting for Christmas that year and one at home in NC.  Thanks to everyone who came to Emma’s party here in NC and special thanks to Mandy and Ian for hosting it at their beautiful new home.  Oh, and a special thanks to Ian for grabbing my camera and getting a rare shot of me with my family!

God bless!

February 25, 2010 - 9:59 am Rich Pizzuti - this is just awesome!

February 25, 2010 - 12:08 pm Katy Gray, Jackson Hole Wedding Photographer - So cute! I love the chocolate covered bananas. Great idea.

February 25, 2010 - 10:37 pm Jennifer DeCesari - Rhode Island Wedding Photographer - What a fun time everyone must have had! I too love the chocolate covered bananas - I may have to steal that some day for my kids! ;)

new york state of mind

The other day while I was processing images from Cassandra and Chen’s January wedding in New York City (can you say cold?), I came across a few photos I wanted to post here to highlight a special revelation I had.  When a man becomes the father of girls, his life is forever changed.  Not just because of the wonderful father-daughter relationship or the armory of guns that you get to store and polish while sitting in your creaky rocking chair in the corner of the room, while staring out the window (hehe…yeah), but also because suddenly everything around you becomes…pink.  Dolls, tea sets, barbies and many other “non-manly” paraphernalia replaces the cordless drill, the hammer, the hockey sticks and the TV remote.  This point was underscored for me on my trip to New York City.  I arrived the day before Cassandra and Chen’s wedding and even though it was like -19 (-200 with windchill), the first and only place I really went to was…you guessed it, the American Girl Place.  I didn’t go see Ground Zero, the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty…I went to see American Girl dolls.  And with another girl due to join our family in April, it’s safe to say my days of “manly-ness” are long gone…and I”m ok with that, because I love my girls.  :)

I wish I could have taken more photos inside but I wasn’t allowed.  They had (I kid you not) a salon…a salon for the dolls with little chairs and mirrors and “beauticians” who pampered your child’s doll.  Oh and how could I forget about the “animal spa” for the pets of your daughters American girl doll?  God forbid we forget about the doll’s pony.  Emma would of had a blast here…and I kinda did too.

I’ll be posting Cassandra and Chen’s intimate little New York wedding real soon.

God bless and keep loving!

no charge, no commitment engagement sessions {raleigh v-day wedding photographer}

Since it’s the season of love, we are giving some serious love this month.  We just announced our new In The Name of Love project where we will donate one complete wedding every year to some well deserving couple and today we are announcing our no charge, no commitment engagement sessions.  Are we serious??  Yes we are.  Are we crazy?  Maybe.

We will be offering this promotion throughout the month of February.  Couples will also receive all of their images from the session on DVD with no other obligation to us.  If you know someone who just got engaged or you know of someone after Valentines Day who got engaged, please pass this along to them!

Happy Valentines!

February 11, 2010 - 12:09 pm Sandi Shipley - Wow! Way to live Generously...I hope you will be blessed ten fold for it :-)

in the name of love

It’s that time of year again…when most of us guys are just recovering financially from lavishing gifts on our loved ones for Christmas and before you know it, here comes Valentines Day in its pink and red splendor begging you to plunk down that credit card just a few more times.  Whoever thought up these holidays MUST be rich by now!

Some of my oldest personal memories of Valentines Day come from being in elementary school where our teacher would drum up excitement about the opportunity to do more crafts.  We would make little “mailboxes” to receive our valentines from other class members by cutting out two large hearts in red or pink construction paper (both colors if you were creative), glue around the lower edges of the heart and stick the two pieces together to create an envelope-type-deal.  Then with all the creativity you could muster you would decorate your mailbox with markers, glitter and pipe-cleaner in order to “lure” your classmates to your desk so that you could score the most valentines.  Eventually, everyone would tape their mailboxes to their desks and the popularity game was set to begin.  Some of us boys knew that this was our moment to find true love…an opportunity to tell the pretty redhead who sits at the front of the class how you really feel without having to pull her hair or fire spitballs at her…you know, the way young boys would.  For others, this whole thing was a living nightmare because this one exercise would underscore how unpopular you were and would seal your fate as a “loser”.  How did it fare for me?  Well, lets just say I didn’t find true love…lol.

Flash forward twenty years and I look back on some of those childhood memories and realize that love IS special and love IS hard work.  This year, my wife and I started doing the “Love Dare”.  For those of you who don’t know what it is, it’s a devotional for couples derived from the movie Fireproof.  It’s a series of “dares” or actions that you follow through on with your partner in order to get you to actively think about and demonstrate your love for each other.  As a young teen or even young adult the misconception is that once you get married, love is automatic and just works for you without much thought.  Obviously, judging by the divorce rate, that is not the case.  The longer you are in a relationship with someone the more you realize that true love is more than being swept off your feet with swirly, whirly, fuzzy emotions where people write books and movies about you like the Notebook.  In fact, you begin to understand that true love is not something you feel but rather something you are compelled to give away, even without the expectation of getting something in return.  What I thought to be love in the 3rd grade is nowhere near what I know love to be today, now that I have a wife and a daughter.  For instance, in the 3rd grade I wanted to feel good, appreciated and popular but now I would throw myself in front of a speeding bus or a stray bullet without thinking, in order to save and protect my wife and my daughter, Emma.  Putting my life on the line is an after-thought…my life, my needs, my wants, my security are now secondary to what is important to me.  In other words, I’m only just beginning to understand what true love is because I am no longer the object of my own affection.

So, in the name of love (one of my favorite U2 songs!), I would like to take this opportunity to announce a new project of ours called, “In The Name of Love”.  Basically, our goal is to find one well-deserving couple who may have fallen on hard times and provide them with top notch wedding photography, complete with an album, DVD of images, etc., a la Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.  Now, here’s were you come in…if you know of a couple (anywhere in the country) who you believe deserve an opportunity like this, please let us know.  We will announce the winning couple on Valentines day 2011 and if it goes over well, we will make this an annual event.  People can email studio@michaelmoss.com with the subject line, “In The Name of Love: Couple’s Name” to provide us with nominations.

Happy Loving!

February 9, 2010 - 8:34 pm Robert Moss - Wow what a beautiful idea,Son you Impress me I really like it keep up the good work,God bless you!!!

raleigh engagement photography {jessa + ryan}

I was so excited when I met Jessa and Ryan last year.  They were a beautiful couple who were just so in love, it was infectious.  Their “goofy” personalities and fun-loving spirit not only made them dear to my heart, but also a joy to photograph!

It was a hot steamy day, but we headed to downtown Raleigh to photograph their engagement session and you can just tell from looking at these photos what a blast we had.  In fact, it was after photographing Jessa and Ryan’s engagement session that we started including engagement sessions in all our wedding collections without bumping up our prices.  That’s how much I love to photograph these sessions!  I always tell my couples to be prepared to tell me to stop so we can all go home at some point in the evening!  I just love what I do that much…lol…you will never catch me looking at my watch on a shoot!

Jessa and Ryan got married at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill, NC and I will be blogging their wedding very soon!

Thanks to all you wonderful people for following our blog!  God bless!

announcing our brand new website!

I’ve been waiting a looooong time for this moment.  Like a teenage boy waiting to get his license, I’ve had this day circled on my calendar, counting down the months, days, and yes minutes and seconds.  I should of had one of those olympic countdowns on my old site…2 years, 142 days, 57 minutes and 32 seconds to something new and exciting…how cool would that be?

Anyway, I am pleased to FINALLY raise the curtain on a brand new website!  My old site has served me well but I must admit I felt little apprehension in kicking it to the curb.  In addition to the shiny new diggs, I’ve also updated my portfolio that was missing at least six months worth of recent work.  So, if you have a spare minute or two click here to go check it out.  You know you wanna!

And also, a special thanks to all my rockin’ clients who make my photos look great!  Thank you so much!

February 27, 2010 - 3:02 am San Jose Photographer - Benipayo - Michael, I also just recently went with the blog website. Love the hell out of it. So easy to tweak unlike my old site. Feels like a new car actually. Mike

raleigh bridal portraits {ashley}

I photographed Ashley’s bridal session last fall and I’m so happy to finally get to post her totally fun, rockin’ photos!  Ashley is the bubbliest (is that a word?), most funnest bride ever!  Ashley grew up on a farm so I really went out of my way to find some kind of place that reminded her of home, and the search was worth it.  I wanted this shoot to have a classic, vintage but fun type feel to it and I believe we accomplished that!

I must thank Ashley for being such a great joy to photograph…she was always up for whatever I asked her to do.  Well, everything except jumping into the lake in her dress at the wedding that is!  But I guess it was kinda cold so you are off the hook Jackson!

Ashley and Corey got married in October and I will be blogging their wonderful wedding real soon.  Enjoy!

raleigh wedding photographer {DWFC 2010}

Last week I had the privilege of attending the Digital Wedding Forum Convention and Imaging USA in Nashville, TN.  At DWFC, a few hundred wedding photographers got to sit under the teaching of some of the best wedding photographers and leaders in the industry today.  Through hours and hours of lectures I constantly found myself shaking my head in disbelief at the amazing talent that was on display.  On one hand it made me feel small and amateurish, but on the other hand it was as if my eyes were opened to what I really could accomplish as ideas and inspiration began to flow inside.  I was already excited about the 2010 wedding season but now I feel as if my armory has been bolstered, my skill has been refined and now I’m ready to take on the world.  And note, that I say “world” carefully because I’m not content to be an average photographer here in my little corner of the universe…I want to be the best there is!  :)

Here are a few photos from a session some of us photographers had with hired models.  It was like -40 outside (actually it was 20 degrees with a nasty windchill that made it feel like -40) but these models were beyond professional.  Thanks to photographer’s Chuck Arlund and Barry Davis for making it happen!

January 20, 2010 - 1:56 pm Sandi Shipley - These are beautiful! Love the lighting and the feel. Gorgeous "brides" too. Well done!

January 20, 2010 - 8:31 pm Steve - WOW ! That blog, and those photos ! Just really good and pleasing for the eyes.

January 21, 2010 - 9:40 pm Mark Andrew Higgins - Absolutely beautiful images. The lighting is top notch and it looks like type of editorial photography seen in high end magazines.

January 22, 2010 - 9:01 am Martha H | Knoxville Wedding Photographer - Killer images. I love the dramatic lighting!
